On Tuesday, the House of Assembly of Ogun State passed a resolution clearing former Speaker Olakunle Oluomo of the embezzlement charges brought forth in the ad hoc Committee’s report regarding his ouster from office on January 23, 2024.
The Deputy Speaker, Lateefat Bolanle Ajayi, reported back to the Assembly on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, on a motion put forth by the previous Speaker; following this, the resolution was passed.
After then, Yusuf Amosun seconded the Deputy Speaker’s motion to adopt the report, and the entire House eventually voted in favour of the measure by voice vote.
“The House noted that the matter of embezzlement of funds was not included in the notice of removal that was served on him and cannot be proven against him,” the report states.
The House also paid close attention to his request in paragraph 4 of the motion, where he asked the House to either clear him of the charge of embezzlement or provide him evidence regarding the financial details of that accusation, in accordance with section 36 of the CFRN 1999 as amended.
After carefully considering the evidence, this esteemed House has decided to drop the charge of embezzlement that was originally used to justify his dismissal.
The report stated that the House of Honour reversed the removal of Rt. Hon. Oluomo, Olakunle Taiwo from office and converted it into a resignation in the spirit of unity, camaraderie, and oneness.
During a house session presided over by Mrs. Ajayi (APC-Yewa South), Oluomo was impeached on January 23, 2024, by 18 of the 26 members of the legislative arm.
Gross misconduct, highhandedness, lack of focus and transparency, financial embezzlement, and pursuit of selfish interests were among the accusations against Oluomo, who represents the Ifo State Constituency, leading to his impeachment.
The speaker was impeached while attending the swearing-in of customary court judges at the June 12 Cultural Centre, Kuto Abeokuta.
