Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, an Islamic scholar from Kaduna, claims that because of their moral upbringing and religious knowledge, Islamic scholars can lead more effectively than professional politicians.
In an interview with the BBC Hausa Service, Gumi made the claim.
He called on Nigerian Islamic academics to become more involved in politics and administration.
Nothing in Islam, he claimed, prohibited Islamic scholars from engaging in politics or running for public office.
He believes that the Ulama should not only participate in religious activities but also exercise political leadership to influence society.
Because of their understanding of Islamic teachings and fear of God, Islamic scholars can provide more moral values and a feeling of duty to governance.
He declared, “Islam does not prohibit an Islamic scholar from engaging in politics or holding a political position.”
The cleric further argued that moral and religious leaders would be more aware of their obligations to the populace.
Therefore, rather than relying solely on professional politicians, he urged Islamic academics to think about running for office and applying for appointments.
According to Gumi, increased Ulama involvement could support accountability in public affairs and enhance governance.
“Professional politicians shouldn’t be the only ones responsible for political leadership. Like all people, Islamic scholars have a responsibility to lead and contribute to the advancement of society, he stated.
